Tree planting planned for former mine

BELLEVIEW - Volunteers have the chance to attend a program and help plant trees on Saturday, March 15, at a former gravel mine in western Boone County at Burlington Pike and Belleview Road that could become a park.

The Boone Conservancy and the Boone County Conservation District have teamed up for the event. Tree planting starts at 10 a.m. Lunch and a program is at noon. Guided tours are 1-2 p.m.

Mark Jacobs, conservation technician with the conservation district, said the district was able to get a $7,500 grant through the state to help re-establish some native vegetation on the site and do some community education. He said about 3,500 seedlings will be planted in the back end of the site where there won't be any excavation.
