Volunteers needed for tree planting

Sunnyside Acres Heritage Society is looking for volunteers willing to dig in for the urban forest at an upcoming planting event.

Ron Meadley said people of all ages are invited to help plant a variety of native trees in an area near the forest’s Chickadee and Trillium Trails.

Vine maples, alders, dogwood and cascara are among the species lined up to take root in an area of the forest that was affected by root rot.

Meadley estimates there will be at least 200 trees – and as many as 400 – to get in the ground.

While previous plantings have typically included shrubs, Meadley said the focus area “already has some pretty good undergrowth.”
