Grassmarket residents in call for root and branch review of tree plans
THE multi-million pound Grassmarket revamp is facing delays amid a continuing row over the loss of five trees.
The city council wants to remove the poplars and replace them with large oak and lime trees as part of the project.
Experts have found that there is some decay in the trees and they could only last a few more years.
But the work has been put back by at least three weeks after dozens of residents protested against the move. Around 60 attended a meeting this week and the council is planning a further meeting next week.
The delay has angered many traders, who say they are losing money due to the constant roadworks in the area. They are anxious work is completed before December, so they can have a successful Christmas period.
