Tree-Planting At Harlem School

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and students from East Harlem’s P.S. 155 helped out a project to plant trees throughout the city Wednesday.

The MillionTreesNYC project intends to plant a million trees throughout the five boroughs over the next ten years, as an extension of the mayor's PlaNYC initiative.

So far, more than 100,000 trees have been planted.

The mayor said the trees help neighborhoods where people suffer from asthma and keep the city's economy healthy as well.

"One of the great by-products of PlaNYC and MillionTreesNYC is a greater demand for jobs in green industries like producing clean energy,” said Bloomberg, “and that's going to help us contribute to diversify our economy right at a time that we really need it so badly."

Bette Midler, founder of the New York Restoration Project, also attended the celebration.
